Valdez (pop 4454)

And we're headed into the clouds again, on our way to Palmer.

Another cruise ship at the Bay.
Part of the museum.

A small museum.

The office at the campground.

This was taken from inside our coach at our campsite where we were parked.

This otter put a show for us for quite a while. He was really having a good time.

This is at the dock.

These are some of the oil storage tanks that are up on top of the mountain.

These were the victims of the earthquake. I believe there were about five complete families swept away.

The new Valdez as seen from the old Valdez.

A cargo ship unloading cargo in the middle of the Bay.

This is some kind of a forklift left at the old site.

Picture at he "old" Valdez site.

This is the road that went to the original site where Valdez once stood. It is 4 miles east of where it was originally. The 1964 earthquake on Good Friday, was the most destructive earthquake to ever hit southcentral Alaska and it virtually destroyed Valdez. The quake measured 9.2 on the Richter scall and was centered in Prince William Sound. A series of local waves caused bya massive underwater landslides swept over and engulfed the Valdez wharf, taking 33 people with it. Seismic action shook the downtown and residential areas. Though much damage was sustained, only the waterfront was destroyed. After the quake the Army Corps of Engineers determined the town should be relocated. By late August 1964, relocation was under way with the last remaining residents at the "old" Valdez, moving to the new town site in 1968.

At the same place we saw this sign. Just a reminder for Tommy.

And here he is after I brought him in. He was a beauty.

When we got to town we decided we were tired and hungry, so we went looking for a place that had hamburgers. We hadn't had a hamberger since we were in the states. We found this little place and got us a hamburger for $8.00 and french fries for almost $4.00. Pretty expensive hamburger and food in general in these little places. When we got out of this little restaurant I saw this eagle on top of this tree.

This is a Fire Bell that is located at the same place.

This is a museum at Valdez. I believe that this were boats that were rescued after the earthquake in 1964.
