Fairbanks Alaska (pop 29,954)

This is an apparatus that fishes for fish, I guess salmon also.

Third moose I've seen. Even though he's real close and real big, I'm not scared of it. He was pretty friendly.

Another picture of Discovery II.

These are domesticated caribou. At first I thought we had just seen them there but then I realized that somebody had let them loose as part of the trip.

Since Tommy was in the mobile home business forever, he thought this was pretty interesting. A single wide mobile home welded to a barge. I guess you would call it a houseboat.

These are some of the people on our boat that were as smart as we were if you know what I mean.

After the dogs get back, they get a treat by getting into the river, something that they love doing.

And here they are coming back from the demonstration. This is how the dogs stay in training. The 4 wheeler has no motor running or anything, they are strickly pulled by the dogs. The dogs love doing what they do and they are always ready to go.
All these places that we are seeing here are along the river. This trip was pretty short (maybe 3 to 4 miles down the river) but it was about 3 1/2 hours long. We stopped and talked to the different people that are a part of the trip. This was Susan Butcher's place. She was an Iditarod Champion and Alaskan Legend. She won the Iditarod Dog Sled Race in 1986, 87, 88 and 1990. Susan is still the only dog musher to summit Mt. McKinley at 20,320 ft. with her dog team. She lost her challenge with leukemia on August 5, 2006 and her husband and 2 daughters still take care of the family business of loving the dogs in their mother's memory. The dogs are getting ready to do a demonstration for us.

Another picture of the people that were smart and took the smaller boat at a much smaller price.

And here he is landing beside us and talking to us over speakers telling us about how the Alaskans survive where temperatures range from 95 to -65 degree F.

Here's our $50 for the both of us, special attraction taking off right in front of our boat.

This is The Discovery II. It is a smaller boat than the one we took. It went ahead of us about 15 to 30 minutes. It has 3 decks where the The Discovery III that we took has 4 decks. We got yipped on that deal. We were going to be gone an hour longer for about 25 extra dollars so we thought we were going to see more and go further. It didn't happen. All we saw different was a plane taking off and landing a couple of times beside the boat and it sure wasn't worth the 25 extra dollars. We were at all times behind the Discovery II and we both stopped at the same places they did.

Here we are the next day boarding up for the boat trip down the Tanana River to where it meets the Chena River.

We went to this place thinking that we would go on this sternwheel boat but after being there for a while we found out that the boat had already made its trip of the day and we'd had to wait until the next day. Tommy was talking to a lady that had already made the trip earlier.

At Fairbanks we stayed at Sam's Club parking lot. We stayed there about 4 or 5 nights. These cars were displayed there at Sam's parking lot also. I don't think they were regular cars. They looked smaller than the normal car.

People kayaking on the Tanana River.
On our way to Fairbanks there wasn't as much scenery as there was to the south of Fairbanks.

We passed through a few of these bridges around Alaska and Canada.

This is a part of a little town that we passed by on our way to Fairbanks. We would of wanted to have stopped as it looked like a pretty interesting little town but sometimes we just have to keep on trucking because we are too big to stop just anywhere. We can do it sometimes but it is just too much of a hassle.
